Our Traditions

The (Honeywell) Half Fast Ski Club was founded in 1978 by three crafty engineers and silver-tongued salesman in Vail, Colorado.  After a client-group meeting, and before I-70 Interstate was built, they wound their way up Route 6 to a very different Vail than you’ll experience today.  After a great time skiing, eating, laughing, and repeating for three days – they decided it should become an annual event.

Since then, limited to a maximum of 25, they have endeavored an annual trip to ski and enjoy the comradery of a like minded, powder hungry crew.  Over the years traditions have been established, roles assigned, and jokes shared.

If you’re reading this and you love skiing, remember that “the slower you ski…  the less gravity you use.”

N

New HFSC members are initiated by jumping out of the hot tub and rolling in the snow. Most elect to quickly jump back into the hot tub.

N

If a member misses a year, he has to be re-initiated by again rolling in the snow on the next trip.

N

Gorilla boogers (a tin of smoked oysters) and Dove ice-cream bars are HFSC food staples. Along with beer and wine, they make up the HFSC basic food groups.

N

Chris Reid introduced in-condo ski hot wax and tune-ups.

N

The location of the next trip and the trip leader are discussed and decided upon at the Saturday night dinner.

N

Lee introduced liars dice and eventually got the HFSC on the wrong side of the Colorado Gaming Commission and certain members of the Mafia.

N

Rob Crain was an early adopter of video cam technology and began videoing the group skiing in the late 80’s.

N

Chris Reid introduced poker pool in Jackson Hole.

N

Chris also introduced the daily tracking of vertical skied using his digital watch/altimeter.
